Basic Wash Care Label Symbols and Their Meanings

All of us may have experienced it at least once – pulling out a favorite piece of clothing from the dry cleaner or laundry machine only to find the clothes in saggy, shrunken, and discolored condition. At this point, you might wish you had paid attention to the symbols on the wash care label of the clothing.

Wash care label symbols can be confusing for those who are not familiar with washing and dry cleaning services. The most common washing symbols seen on the wash care labels are explained below. Read ahead to understand what these symbols mean so that the next time you see these symbols, you will understand exactly what it means.

Normal Wash Symbol

This symbol is usually depicted as a water-filled bucket. This symbol shows the machine setting or temperature that is to be used to wash the particular clothing. Normal wash symbol means that the clothing should be washed in normal temperature water.

Normal Wash with Dot

This is the normal wash symbol with a dot or dots in it. In some cases, the dot may be replaced with a temperature value. There can be one to six dots inside the wash symbol denoting various temperature ranges. One dot equals 30°C, two dots 40°C, three dots 50°C, four dots 60°C, five dots 70°C, and six dots 95°C.

Permanent Press Symbol

This is the symbol with a line under the normal wash symbol. Clothing with this symbol has been treated with chemicals to make sure that they retain their original shape and are wrinkle free. If you see this symbol on your clothing, it means that you should not iron it after washing and drying.

Gentle Cycle Symbol

The gentle cycle symbol is simply the normal wash symbol with two lines under it. This symbol means that the clothing is made of delicate fiber like silk or wool that can be damaged by vigorous machine washing.

Hand Wash Symbol

This is the standard wash symbol with a hand at the top of it, meaning that the clothing should not be machine-washed. These garments should be washed in a tub or sink with hands to make sure that cleaning liquid is rubbed into the cloth. In addition, you need to make sure that the cleaning liquid used is suitable for hand washing and for the fabric.
